Of Cooking and Gaming…

I’ve been pretty darn busy this last week. The lack of my roommates (parents) in the home has shifted many household responsibilities on to me. So my time’s been filling up with things like cooking, doing groceries, and other grown-up things.

Turns out the whole cooking thing is in the blood. The succulent dishes I prepared were all successes and effortless. Highlights include tex-mex chicken and authentic chicken wings. I should expand my repertoire.

Mass Effect!

In other news, I’m proud to say I’m a regular PC gamer again. The critical success of Mass Effect 2, prompted me to dive into the original, so I’m working on that. Part of me wishes it was KOTOR 3, but whatever. Apparently the story is supposed to be amazing. So far, it’s been alright.

The other game I started today was Bioshock 2. Being in Rapture again is sweet. Still both eerie and nautical. I just started, so there’s this feeling of dread when I think of how many hours of scares I need to invest in it. It happens every time!

Next week we get AVP, which has a strong track record of performing quite well in videogames, unlike its movie counterparts. We are also getting Plants vs. Zombies on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Who needs a girlfriend now? HAR HAR HARRRRRRRR

Lost is back and Oscar nom impressions…

Just finished watching the 2hr season premiere of Lost.

For what is supposed to be the final season of the show, where we are given all the answers, it certainly opened a can of, “I don’t know wtf is going on.” I’m sure I will get all the answers I want in due course.

In other news, the Oscar noms were announced today. The new format of the Best Pictures nominations was interesting, as there were 10, including nothing that was Star Trek.

I kinda want Avatar and Jim Cameron to get Oscars for Best Picture and Directing. I’m not going into whether or not it deserves them or not because of all the controversy caused by the people who thought that it was crap (they are basically wrong…and stupid. Such are the benefits of having ones own blog. Let the hating begin.) Anyway…the real reason is, the movie is on a roll. It’s become the highest grossing film of all time (no one cares about inflation or 3d glasses for that matter), beating Cameron’s last film which, lets face it, wasn’t as good as Avatar. We all know that Titanic also got a shit-load of Oscars/Awards too. So what does that mean if he does it twice? It is the answer to that question which intrigues me the most.

Or an Oscar-bait movie might actually get the appropriate awards. Who knows…and really…who cares? A bunch of film nerds and industry professionals that still believe in the credibility of the show.

That’s my rant about the Oscars and the dumb-dumbs that got upset over what was supposed to be a fairly straight-forward film.

Anyway, I think I’ve offended enough people for one post.

Good night, and good luck…

iPad impressions and empty threats…

So Apple decided to unveil its “newest creation” today. The iPad.

I was expecting a little bit more than what has been delivered. Didn’t quite trump the innovation of the iPhone, but rather duplicated it and made it a bit bigger. Oh, and I can read books on it. Hopefully it will be better in future iterations. But really, I’ll settle for a cooler iPhone and a mbp later on.

At least we got Optical Flares this week. I can’t wait to try this out and make everything look like Star Trek. Honestly, they should’ve just called it “Star Trek for After Effects”.

Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time this week. I didn’t see that coming. Cameron’s got the golden touch it seems. We’ll see how golden it is at the Oscars. I reckon it’ll rack up a load of technical Oscars noms and get em all. The film definitely deserves em. As far as the Best Picture goes, I would like it to get it, but I don’t think that would be fair to the other films this year that actually deserve it. Like Star Trek. The best film of 2009. BETTER THAN ALL OF THEM!!!!! I will fight anyone who disputes this with me.

So the short is coming along well. Yes. I’m trying to put a short film together. It’s a collaboration between myself and my friend, Mike Edmund. We’re still figuring the story out. Hopefully in the next month or two we’ll have a final script ready (if we keep at the rate we have been), and then we’ll hit pre-production. That’s all I can say for now.

In other news, I gave my friend, Jason a blog too. Apparently he’s going to try and blog the f*ck out of me. So far, 1 post. He means well though. Go check it out.

Another weekend overrrrrrrr…and jazzle.

Yes. I put a few extra r’s in there for added emphasis.

I’ve noticed that’s the cool thing to do now. It says, “I like to emphasize words, but I’m lazy too”. Though I’m only lazy, not a word emphasizer…in real life.

Well, this marks the end of another week. January is almost over. Three months left before the end of the challenge.

I haven’t spoken much about the challenge here. I will soon though. All I can say is it weighs heavily on my mind, everyday. The urge to give up on it is ever-present. But I must harden my resolve and continue through it, as hard as it may be. Only then shall I be victorious over the one who shall remain unnamed. All I shall say for now is, that his exit hole is a jazzle.

I saw some good movies this weekend.

-The Book of Eli
-Julie & Julia
-Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

The Book of Eli was extremely problematic, and I’m not sure if I agree with it’s message, but it had cool fight scenes, and was written by a man who had a big impact on my youth. I am of course speaking of Gary Whitta, the former EIC of PC Gamer. When I was going through high school, PC Gamer was my lifestyle magazine of choice, and he ran it like Captain Picard ran the Enterprise; awesomely. So that is what I have to say about The Book of Eli.

Julie & Julia was a delightful little chick flick. Amy Adams, continues to be extremely adorable and I will kill her husband, make it look like an accident, and take his place one day. All in due course, my pretties. Oh, and it’s about cooking french cuisine. Yum.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was pretty awesome. An earlier work of Charlie Kaufman that I had overlooked. His style was definitely present, and George Clooney, added some nice flare to it. I’m gonna revisit that sucker with his commentary.

I also got back into Fringe this weekend too. Yes, I watch a lot of shit. Honestly, I’m losing interest in Eve Online, so now I’m going back to watching more stuff. So yeah…this guy likes to do sitting-around-activities.

I did go to the gym today. So stop judging me.

Good night. :D

Gav’s weekend in review…

So I had a pretty good weekend, albeit a short one as usual.

Lets start with the latest stuff…the Golden Globes. I watched it, and thanks to this blog, I can put my opinion on that, on this.

I’m happy Avatar won everything it could. It deserved the awards. I hope it does the same for the Oscars, but I doubt that will happen. The show itself wasn’t bad. Gervais did an ok job hosting. Some of his jokes were weird with my parents in the same room, but whatever. Everyone enjoyed his Mel Gibson joke.

Will we see this again?

So Star Trek Online (Open Beta) was crap. It was hard to believe the game could be good with it in such poor condition 2 weeks before the release, so after reading more complaints online from other beta-testers, I did the smart thing and uninstalled it, and got myself a refund. Yay Steam! In the wake of that decision, I decided to try out Eve Online. It’s been around for years, and I never really gave it a good chance. So I’m doing that now, and like what I’m experiencing. It may end up being the MMO fix I’ve been looking for.

On Saturday, I saw Youth In Revolt, staring our favourite Hollywood star from Brampton, Michael Cera. It was funny and well-put-together. Definitely unique. Go see it, if you’ve seen Avatar. And if you haven’t seen Avatar, you’re probably the only one who hasn’t. Fifth week in a row it’s been number one. Who needs reviews when you have numbers like that?

Well that’s my weekend, folks. I’m glad you read this far.

On to f*cking Monday now…ugh.

New logo, and ST: Online impressions…

I said in an earlier post that things would be changing around here….and they have.

There’s a sick, new logo up there. Check it out, if you are completely blind, and haven’t already.

I also got this thing linked to facebook, so if you’re visiting here from there, welcome. In attempts to attention-whore my life to the world, a post will be added to my facebook every time I make a post here. Enjoy it, bitches.

In other news I tried the open-beta for Star Trek: Online today.

It was kinda cool except for the part where it lagged like a mofo. Also, there were some performance issues, which means my PC needs to be more l337. I guess that’s the whole point of the beta. Hopefully these things will be resolved in the final release. I just hope this isn’t another crappy Star Trek video-game. There have been enough of them already.

Anyway…that’s all for now. Time to watch Big Bang Theory…
